    How Evolution Changes CP

Evolving a Pokemon swaps its base stats for the evolved form's - that's the only thing that changes. Its level and all three IVs (Attack, Defense, Stamina) carry over exactly as they were, which is why two Pokemon of the same species, level, and IVs always evolve into the exact same CP. The calculator above runs the real CP formula with the evolved form's base stats and your current level and IVs, so there's no need to evolve first just to see the number.

    Candy Cost and Evolution Items

Every evolution costs Candy specific to that species' family, and some also require an evolution item in your bag or a field condition to be met. Common GO-specific items include Sun Stone, King's Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, Up-Grade, Sinnoh Stone, and Unova Stone - these are Pokemon GO's own evolution items, not identical to how the mainline games handle the same species, so don't assume an item carries over the same way. XL Candy is never required to evolve a Pokemon - only to power one up past level 40 - so evolving is always within reach regardless of your XL Candy stock.

    Eevee's Evolutions

Eevee is the clearest example of why checking first matters: it can become any of eight different species, each with its own base stats and so its own projected CP. Select Eevee above to see every branch side by side - including the guaranteed methods (buddy evolutions for Espeon/Umbreon, Lure Module evolutions for Leafeon/Glaceon, and Special Research for Sylveon) rather than leaving it to the random default outcome.

Why Check CP Before Spending Candy

Evolving is permanent and some evolution items are hard to re-earn - checking the projected CP and IV spread first avoids spending Candy and an item on a Pokemon that won't be worth investing in further. It's also useful the other way: confirming an evolution's CP will clear a PvP league cap, or that a low-Candy-cost early evolution is still worth it for a Pokedex entry even if the final form isn't.

One common question is whether to evolve before or after powering up: since level and IVs carry through evolution unchanged either way, the final CP comes out the same regardless of order - but powering up the pre-evolved form first can waste Stardust and Candy if the evolved form's base stats would have gotten you to the same CP for less. Checking the evolved form's CP above before powering up anything is the safer order.

Already Know the CP You Want to Check?

This calculator needs a Pokemon's level and IVs to project its evolved CP - if you only have its current CP and HP, work out its IVs with the IV calculator or its level with the level calculator first, then come back here.
